Tyler and Seuss, the Crossover you Didn't Know you Needed

Updated: Jan 23, 2019

If there's one superpower that all movies crave, it's watch-ability, and festive flicks defiantly hold all the power. Christmas movies are undoubtedly the godfather of the industry, every year major film studios try to conjure up the next 'A Christmas Carol' or 'Home Alone' so they can see dollar signs in their eyes every December. Or even lazier, they roll out a remake of an old classic; a remake of a remake of a remake, on the other hand, is all the more questionable.

This November our favourite grumpy green fella is getting a fancy GCI face-lift in the form of Universal Picture's The Grinch. Unlike the previous versions, however, this remake has also been given a fancy new makeover with the help from controversial rapper Tyler, the Creator. I guess he's hoping to be on Santa's good list this year.

The film is set to hit cinema screens on November 9th, just in time to join the 18th birthday party of Jim Carrey's iconic adaptation. With the help from Oscar-nominated music man Danny Elfman, Tyler, the Creator is the next in line to put his spin on the Christmas anthem 'You're A Mean One Mr Grinch'. Originally sung by Thurl Ravenscroft back in 1966, and then by Jim Carrey in 2000, Tyler has turned Dr Seuess' iconic sound into a hip-hop hit, but Tyler isn't only giving us one present this Christmas. The American rapper has also produced an original hit for the movie titled 'I am the Grinch', which is yet to grace our ears and is set to be released along with the film.

The song starts with the classic Christmas twinkling sound before moving into the iconic rapper's monotonous voice, which honestly sounds like he'd rather be anywhere else than creating this song. His rap background, however, can be heard straightaway with a drum backbeat giving the track an overall swagger-esque sound. Tyler isn't the only one featured on the song though, a children's choir can be heard throughout, adding backing vocals and the occasional 'ew' which is a great touch. In the middle, Tyler quietens the music and jumps into a rap verse giving the song its new and unique style. “All those smiles homie, I turn them frowns / All them decoration / I tear them down / You can ask Max / I don’t play around". The overall song is incredibly catchy and will have lyrics both old and new like “You’re as cuddly as a cactus / You’re as charming as an eel”, “Who’s this mean fella with his skin all green and his teeth all yellow?” flying around your head for days. It's a unique genre blend of hip-hop and Christmas, but it works!
